Iran judiciary intervenes over woman's prison death
OFFLINE
Iran's judiciary chief intervened on Tuesday in the case of a young female doctor who died in custody, ordering the supreme court to decide whether to transfer the probe to a Tehran court.

Zahra Bani Yaghoub was found dead in her cell in western Iran last year after being arrested for consorting with an unrelated male in public, in what the local authorities originally said was a suicide by hanging.

Her family lawyer Shirin Ebadi, the Nobel peace prize winner, have vehemently argued that her death was not suicide and urged the judiciary to take the case away from the provinces to a Tehran court.

Shirin Ebadi founds Iranian Peace Movement
OFFLINE
Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi has called for the creation of a broad-based "National Peace Council" to give voice to Iranians who want to halt a perceived drift toward military conflict with the United States.

Ebadi, a Tehran-based human rights activist and lawyer, this week invited all Iranians to participate in the creation of the national body, saying the initiative emerged from a group of activist lawyers called the Center of Human Rights Defenders, which she co-founded.

The council is seen primarily as a discussion forum, but analysts say it has the potential to offer an alternative to the pro-confrontation policies of the current Iranian leadership.
