| A fierce democracy advocate in South Korea, in 1971 he won 46% of the vote against the Park military regime. One month later he survived his first assassination attempt. Over the next years he was kidnapped, sentenced to death (and spared by diplomatic pressure) and lived under house arrest for his pro-democracy activities.
After the fall of the military government in 1997, Kim was elected president . He vigorously pursued international support for his "Sunshine Policy", to establish relations with the Stalinist North. His policy of détente culminated in June of 2000, when he traveled to North Korea and met with Kim Jong-il for a three day summit. He was the first South Korean leader to do so since the Korean War ended. These meetings laid the groundwork for today's peace negotiations with North Korea.
