Brokered peace between Egypt and Israel, champion of democracy |
Thirty-ninth President of the United States. Accomplishments of his administration included the Camp David Accords, the treaty of peace between Egypt and Israel, which brought a peace that has lasted 30 years, the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union, and the establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. He championed human rights throughout the world.
After leaving the White House President Carter and Rosalynn founded the Atlanta-based Carter center, a nonprofit organization that works to promote peace, democracy and human rights. The center has engaged in conflict mediation in Ethiopia and Eritrea, North Korea, Liberia, Haiti, Bosnia, Sudan, the Great Lakes region of Africa, Uganda, and Venezuela. The Carter Center has sent forty-five international election monitoring delegations to elections in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. |
