He has been called a "rock star of international diplomacy". Born in Kumasi, Ghana in 1938, Kofi Annan was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the first to be elected from the ranks of UN staff.
In 1962, after receiving a master's degree in management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined the UN, working for the World Health Organization in Geneva, and with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He was Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping at a time when nearly 70,000 military and civilian personnel were deployed in UN operations around the world.
Annan described his job as Secretary General as "a race against time." He won praise from developing and powerful nations alike. Former US Ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke has described Annan as "the best Secretary-General in the history of the UN."
AFter his retirement as Secretary General, Annan became involved with several organizations with both global and African focuses. In 2007, he was named chairman of the prize committee for the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, was chosen to lead the new formation of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), became a member of the Global Elders, was appointed president of the Global Humanitarian Forum in Geneva.
In February of 2008 he successfully negotiated a coalition government agreement between Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and opposition candidate Raila Odinga, bringing an end to violence that had threatened to plunge the country into civil war.
